What Are Implant Dentures?

Did you know that the jawbone begins thinning after tooth loss? It starts to degenerate without as many roots in place to stimulate new bone growth each time you bite down. As your mouth thins, the bony ridges flatten, making it difficult for traditional dentures to form a tight enough seal against your gums to remain firmly in place.

Meanwhile, getting implant dentures involves surgically placing anywhere from two to four posts into your jawbone to support a new set of replacement teeth. These function like roots to maintain the foundation of your teeth and gums, while rebuilding your arches so you can eat, speak, and smile more confidently. There are two types, outlined in more detail below.

Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures

This option involves cementing your customized dentures to your dental implants so that they cannot be removed, allowing them to function more naturally. Not only are there fewer dietary restrictions than with traditional dentures, but these restorations can also be brushed and flossed like natural teeth.

Removable Implant Dentures

Some patients might be better candidates for bar- or ball-retained dentures, which are designed to attach easily and reliably to their implants, but which can be popped out for cleanings. This solution can be significantly more reliable than standard dentures and also helps preserve the jawbone.

The Implant Denture Process

At our Montpelier office, Dr. Hale has completed specialized training to place and restore your dental implants in the office for a more streamlined experience. First, you must schedule a consultation appointment so our team can examine your mouth to determine if you’re a good candidate.

Then, Dr. Hale will numb your mouth to help keep you comfortable and carefully create small incisions to strategically place the needed number of implants. It can take 3 to 6 months to heal, as your mouth must form enough new bone growth to fuse with these posts. Then, once you’ve mended sufficiently, our team can provide your one-of-a-kind dentures and anchor them in place.

Am I a Candidate for Implant Dentures?

Getting implant dentures involves oral surgery, so our team will need to update your medical history, list any current medications or supplements that you take regularly, and examine your current dental condition to ensure you’re a good candidate.

For instance, you must have healthy connective tissues and a strong enough jawbone to support your new teeth. Some patients require pre-treatments, such as gum disease therapy or a bone graft to bulk up their jaw, before proceeding.

You must also demonstrate a commitment to dental hygiene to avoid complications that contribute to implant failure.

Benefits of Combining Dentures & Dental Implants

This treatment combines the versatility and convenience of dentures with the strength and resilience of dental implants, providing the following unique advantages:

  • Better bite force. Only dental implants can restore up to 80% of your original chewing power, so you can enjoy more of your favorite foods.
  • Enhanced enunciation. Many patients can overcome changes to their speech patterns, such as a lisp or slur, caused by tooth loss or ill-fitting dentures.
  • Improve your confidence. Your prosthetic is carefully customized to resemble your natural enamel and connective tissues, helping you look and feel like the most beautiful, confident version of yourself.
  • Long-lasting materials. These replacements can last 20+ years with proper care, making them an excellent long-term solution.
  • Preserve your jawbone. Implants are the only way to prevent the jawbone degeneration that usually accompanies tooth loss, supporting your oral health and facial structure.
