5 Back-to-School Tips to Ace Your Dental Exam

As you head back to the classroom, it’s easy to forget about small tasks throughout the day, like brushing before bed. While you aim for good grades, don’t forget to give your mouth the attention it needs or you might hear bad news next time you see your dentist. Here are 5 back to school tips to ensure you pass your dental exam with flying colors.

1. Brush Twice a Day

Your toothbrush and toothpaste are the most important items you have at home to combat cavities, which affects 92% of adults. The American Dental Association recommends brushing your teeth at least twice a day to remove food residue and plaque. Although it’s easy to crawl into bed without brushing after a long day at school, your teeth rely on your toothbrush to prevent cavities. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste to clean all surfaces of your teeth for 2 minutes in the morning and at night.

2. Don’t Forget to Floss

Brushing alone can leave 40% of your teeth surfaces uncleaned because your toothbrush can’t reach everywhere. Flossing is the only way to remove buildup that can cause gum disease, which affects 50% of adults and is a leading cause of tooth loss. Commit to flossing your teeth at least once a day to keep your gums healthy.

3. Limit Sugary Foods and Drinks

Sugars and starches feed cavity-causing bacteria that can erode your enamel. It’s best to limit foods and drinks that contribute to decay. If you’re snacking more often, brush your teeth after every meal. If you can’t get to your toothbrush, chew a piece of sugarless gum or rinse your mouth with water to remove any residue from your mouth.

4. Drink More Water

A dry mouth is a great environment for oral bacteria growth. Staying hydrated will keep your mouth moist to combat bad breath, cavities, and gum disease. Healthcare professionals recommend drinking at least eight 8oz glasses of water every day.

5. Don’t Ignore Dental Problems

Your schedule can get pretty busy, but don’t ignore toothaches and other dental concerns. Putting off seeing a dentist can cause a minor issue to turn into a big problem. Visit your dentist promptly to prevent a dental emergency from keeping you out of the classroom.

Besides caring for your smile at home, don’t forget to visit your dentist every 6 months for a cleaning and checkup. They’ll keep your mouth healthy to prevent common dental issues, so you can spend more time focusing on your academics.
